JOLLOF WARS

I remember Kwame Onwuachi telling me about jollof rice when I ate at his restaurant in D.C. It’s basically a rice-and-tomato-based pot that gets customized to suit the vision of a particular cook. It’s a dish of the people, literally: the name comes from the Wolofs of West Africa. Jollof wars are a big deal in the Nigerian diaspora. People bring their unbeatable family recipes and pit them against other people’s unbeatable family recipes. There’s even a big competition in D.C. to judge the best jollof. The Young Senators would be proud. But the great jollof-off also reminded me that potlucks are about collaboration and also, beneath that, sometimes about competition, and that put me in the mind of “Blame It on the Boogie.” It’s a famous hit by the Jacksons, from the 1978 album Destiny; it was the first album I bought when I came off a major punishment in 1978. “Blame It on the Boogie” was a Jackson original, but it wasn’t. It was written by a British songwriter named Mick Jackson. He had recorded his own original version, and British radio stations pitted them against each other in a battle of the boogie. I dedicate “Blame It on the Boogie” not to Kwame alone, not to Yvonne Orji alone, but to both of them, and to the jollof wars.
